Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to work in the U.S. in their field of study for up to 12 months after graduation. Graduates in certain STEM fields can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, bringing the total to 36 months of U.S. work experience.
Must be in valid F-1 status
OPT: Work must relate directly to field of study
STEM OPT: Degree must be in DHS-approved STEM field
Employer must be E-Verify registered (for STEM OPT)
Must not exceed 90 days of unemployment on OPT
Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization)
Valid Form I-20 endorsed for OPT or STEM OPT
E-Verify employer information (for STEM OPT)
Job offer letter or employment details (recommended)
Copy of previous EAD card and passport
Degree transcripts or diploma
USCIS Processing: 2–4 months
