Optional Practical Training (OPT) & STEM OPT Extension

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to work in the U.S. in their field of study for up to 12 months after graduation. Graduates in certain STEM fields can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, bringing the total to 36 months of U.S. work experience.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be in valid F-1 status

  • OPT: Work must relate directly to field of study

  • STEM OPT: Degree must be in DHS-approved STEM field

  • Employer must be E-Verify registered (for STEM OPT)

  • Must not exceed 90 days of unemployment on OPT

Required Documents

  • Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization)

  • Valid Form I-20 endorsed for OPT or STEM OPT

  • E-Verify employer information (for STEM OPT)

  • Job offer letter or employment details (recommended)

  • Copy of previous EAD card and passport

  • Degree transcripts or diploma
