Adjustment of Status is the process of applying for a green card from inside the U.S. If a foreign national is already in the U.S. on a valid visa and becomes eligible for permanent residence (e.g. via marriage to a U.S. citizen), they may adjust status without leaving the country.
Must be physically present in the U.S.
Must have entered the U.S. lawfully
Must be eligible under an immigrant category (e.g., spouse of U.S. citizen)
Must not be barred due to unlawful presence, fraud, or criminality (exceptions apply)
Approved or concurrently filed I-130 or I-129F
