Dependent Child Sponsorship

The Dependent Child Sponsorship stream allows Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children to live in Canada as permanent residents. Children must meet the definition of a dependent according to Canadian immigration law.

Eligibility Criteria

Sponsor must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

  • Not be in default of any prior sponsorship agreements

  • Not be receiving social assistance (unless for disability)

Child must:

  • Be under 22 years of age and unmarried, or

  • Over 22 and financially dependent due to a physical or mental condition

  • Be admissible to Canada

Required Documents

  • Child’s birth certificate

  • Proof of relationship (e.g., custody or adoption papers)

  • Canadian sponsor’s passport or PR card

  • IMM 1344 and related forms

  • Child’s passport and photos

  • Police certificates (if applicable and over 18)

  • Medical exam results

Approximately 8–10 months, depending on the country of residence and application volume
