The N-400 Application for Naturalization is the official process for lawful permanent residents to become U.S. citizens. This includes passing a civics exam, demonstrating good moral character, and meeting residency and physical presence requirements.
Must be at least 18 years old
Must have held a green card for:
5 years (general rule), or
3 years (if married to a U.S. citizen)
Must have lived in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the past 5 years
Must demonstrate good moral character
Must pass a civics and English test (waivers may apply)
Must intend to reside permanently in the U.S.
