N-400 Application — U.S. Naturalization

The N-400 Application for Naturalization is the official process for lawful permanent residents to become U.S. citizens. This includes passing a civics exam, demonstrating good moral character, and meeting residency and physical presence requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Must have held a green card for:

    • 5 years (general rule), or

    • 3 years (if married to a U.S. citizen)

  • Must have lived in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the past 5 years

  • Must demonstrate good moral character

  • Must pass a civics and English test (waivers may apply)

  • Must intend to reside permanently in the U.S.

Required Documents

  • Form N-400

  • Copy of green card (front and back)

  • Proof of residency (tax returns, leases, utility bills)

  • Marriage certificate/divorce decrees (if applicable)

  • Proof of selective service registration (males age 18–26)

  • Evidence of child support compliance (if applicable)

  • Police clearance or court records (if prior arrests exist)
